Roadworthy / Safety Certificates

Roadworthy - Vehicle/Car

When is a Safety Certificate Needed?

  1. Registration Transfer to a New Owner: Selling or buying a vehicle in Queensland? A safety certificate is mandatory before the transfer of registration to ensure the vehicle meets minimum safety standards.

  2. Transferring to Queensland Registration: New to Queensland? When transferring your vehicle's registration from another state or territory, a safety certificate validates that your vehicle is roadworthy in Queensland.

  3. Re-registering an Unregistered Vehicle: Bringing an unregistered vehicle back on the road requires a safety certificate, confirming it's safe to drive.

Important Updates on Safety Certificate Requirements

As of the latest regulations, a safety certificate is no longer required before offering a registered vehicle for sale. However, this rule comes with an important caveat:

  • Disposal of a Registered Vehicle: If you're disposing of a registered vehicle, other than to a dealer, obtaining a safety certificate beforehand remains mandatory. Failure to comply may result in a fine exceeding $700.

Roadworthy - Trailer/Campers

When to Apply for New Registration in Queensland

  1. Purchasing a New Trailer or Caravan: If you've bought a trailer or caravan that has never been registered, it's essential to apply for registration to legally tow it on Queensland roads.

  2. Acquiring a Used Unregistered Trailer or Caravan: Buying a used trailer or caravan that's currently unregistered requires you to initiate the registration process before you can legally use it.

  3. Relocating from Another State or Territory: Moving to Queensland? You'll need to register your trailer or caravan locally to comply with state regulations.

  4. Expired Registration: If your trailer or caravan's registration expired more than three months ago, a new registration is mandatory. Note that a HVRAS (Heavy Vehicle Registration Assessment Scheme) Measure Up may be required as part of this process.

The Registration Process for Trailers and Caravans in Queensland

Understanding the registration process is crucial for trailer and caravan owners in Queensland. The process ensures that your vehicle meets all safety and compliance standards, protecting you and other road users.

Roadworthy - Motorbike

When is a Motorbike Safety Certificate Required in Queensland?

  • Transferring Registration to a New Owner: Selling or buying a motorbike? A safety certificate is a must before the transfer of registration to the new owner, ensuring the motorbike meets safety standards.

  • Transferring to Queensland Registration: New to Queensland? If you're transferring your motorbike's registration from another state or territory, obtaining a Queensland safety certificate is essential.

  • Re-registering an Unregistered Motorbike: To bring an unregistered motorbike back to the roads legally, you'll need a safety certificate confirming it meets safety requirements.

  • Disposing of a Registered Motorbike: Before disposing of a registered motorbike, other than to a dealer, securing a current safety certificate is mandatory. Ignoring this requirement could result in a fine exceeding $700.
